What does my skin need to thrive?

Close your eyes and picture your skin. From your face to your hands, your shoulders to your feet, your skin is hard at work. While it is covering your body, it is actively working to defend against environmental stress, prevent moisture loss, support immune defense, regulate temperature, and maintain balance. Regardless of if we are caring for it or not, our skin is doing its very best with what it’s been given for our bodies. That is why it is important that we understand what skin truly is and what it needs to do its job effectively.
Your skin has three main layers, the epidermis, the dermis, and subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is the outermost layer where the skin barrier lives. The dermis is the supportive middle layer, and the subcutaneous layer is the deeper cushioning and insulation. For every day skin care we typically focus on the epidermis and the outermost portion known as the skin barrier which is made of skin cells held together by lipids (fats). For a visual, think of it as bricks (cells) and mortar (lipids). When the structure is strong, the skin feels comfortable hydrated and supple. When the structure is weakened, the skin may feel dry tight, be easily reactive, and irritated. Needless to say, but I will say it anyway, healthy skin begins with barrier support.
So, what our skin needs to thrive?
Regardless of your skin type, all skin requires hydration, lipids, gentle cleansing, consistency, and protection...but what do these things mean?
Hydration: the water content within the skin.
Lipids: the good fats that help to reinforce the skin barrier.
Gentle cleansing of the skin: Getting clean without stripping the skin natural oils. Instead of opting for a one-time, harsh treatment opt for a gentle product that you can use consistently instead.
Consistency in product usage: Using the same products and dedicating the same amount of time to giving your skin what it needs daily. With skincare it's important to know that results don’t need to happen overnight. The payoff is so much better when you can look back over the course of a few weeks a couple of months and see the progress that your skin has made because you have been putting in the time and care it needs.
Protection from environmental stressors: Environmental stressors for the skin are external factors that cause oxidative damage, inflammation, and premature aging by weakening the skin barrier. Key culprits UV rays, air pollution, extreme temperatures, low humidity, blue light from screens, and wind. These stressors, particularly free radicals from pollution and sun, breakdown collagen and damage DNA over overtime.
Sounds really scary, right? With the right products that support the skin barrier, you are fighting against these environmental stressors that might deteriorate your skin at a faster rate.
How do I help my skin to thrive?
To help your skin thrive you must first learn your skin type. If you don’t know your skin type yet, check out this post.
Normal skin
Normal skin needs consistent hydration, gentle, clean, cleansing, and maintenance level barrier support. Normal skin benefits from lightweight hydration, and protective ingredients that maintain resilience overtime but keep in mind that even balanced skin can become dry or reactive if over treated.
Oily skin
Oil skin needs hydration without heaviness, non-stripping cleansers, barrier supportive ingredients, and balanced formulations. It is important to remember that oily skin still needs moisture. Over cleansing or harsh exfoliation can disrupt the barrier and lead to an increase oil production. As much as we want to avoid the "greasy" look, stripping your skin of all its natural oils is not the solution. The key is to support, not strip.
Combination skin
Combination skin is skin that behaves differently all over the body. For individuals with this skin type, flexible hydration across your body is needed and layering products is recommended. Layered products in skin care refers to the technique of applying multiple products in a specific order typically from thinnest/lightest consistency to thickest/heaviest-to maximize absorption, efficacy and hydration. This approach allows active ingredients to penetrate deeply while stealing in moisture supporting overall barrier health help balancing different areas overtime.
Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin reacts easily to internal or external triggers. Sensitive skin thrives with fragrance free formulations, minimal ingredient lists, barrier lipid strengthening products, as well as hydration that reduces tightness. Sensitive skin needs simplicity and consistency as reducing unnecessary irritants allows the barrier to function more effectively. Contrary to what a lot of eczema prone individuals may think, you don’t need grandma’s goat milk in order to treat your skin.
Dry or Eczema-prone skin
Eczema, prone skin often experiences, increased dryness, and barrier vulnerability. Eczema prone skin needs hydrating ingredients that support natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) lipid reinforcement, consistent, gentle routines, and avoidance of harsh surfactants or irritants. Because the skin barrier may be easily compromised, intentional care becomes especially important.
Understanding what your skin’s baseline is helps you to recognize when additional support is needed. While it may be tempting to hop on every skin or body care trend, frequent product changes can disrupt even the most resilient skin. Skin thrives with hydration, barrier reinforcement, gentle care, and patience rather than the latest and greatest harsh treatment or exfoliant that has gone viral. Whether it’s your face or your body, your skin flourishes when it’s supported.
At Access Essential Skincare we believe healthy skin begins with understanding and thrives with barrier focused care designed to support hydration and resilience across the entire body.
